My internship is with a small private Islamic School in the city of Gresik, on Java Island, Indonesia. It is a cross culture exchange program, where I tell the students about what life is like in New York, where I live. I also am learning from the students, the school, and the locals in general what it is like to be an Indonesian. I learn about the culture and their religion, their food, their language, etc.
I knew it was tropical paradise, due to all of the research I did online before my departure, but seeing all of the beautiful islands in real life…it’s a whole other experience. Lombok, the Gili Islands, Bali, Malang, Jogjakarta, Surabaya, Jakarta and Sumatra. All So beautiful in their own unique way. The rice fields. The palm trees. The crystal clear turquoise beaches. The waterfalls. The volcanoes and mountains. The jungles. I can’t get over how big and beautiful this country is.
Also, since I am Muslim, I found it a plus that the majority of this country is also muslim. I have never experienced this in New York, hearing the athan of the mosque in the streets. For me, this was beautiful and fascinating.
